The Dean of the Faculty of Law at Charles University hereby announces 

a call for applications 

for a full-time or part-time position as Assistant Professor in Digital and Empirical Constitutionalism (2+2 years, with the possibility of a tenure track) at the Institute for the Interregional Study of Constitutionalism (IISC). 

Charles University is the leading university in Central Europe, boasting a nearly 700-year tradition and excellent international rankings, making it one of the most reputable and prestigious universities worldwide. The Faculty of Law, established in 1348 as one of the university’s four founding faculties, is now the largest accredited law faculty in the Czech Republic, with over 4,500 students. 

We are seeking a candidate whose research focuses on discourse analysis in the (digital) public sphere, the role of deliberative democracy in the context of social media, and uses empirical methods in the analysis of collective identity. The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary research team studying constitutionalism as a foundation for collective identity and community. 

The initial contract will be for two years. Upon a successful review, the candidate may receive a contract extension of up to two years, with a pathway to a permanent position. 

Your Tasks 

  1. Conduct research on following topics: (1) identity politics, the digital public sphere, and deliberative democracy; (2) constitutionalism and the construction of collective identity. 

  1. Use tools like text mining and machine learning to collect and analyze (social) media content, governmental documents, and legal texts (discourse analysis). 

  1. Program social bots on social media platforms for research purposes. 

  1. Design, oversee, and analyze a survey using statistical methods. 

  1. Collaborate closely with the research team on the conduct of the research. 

  1. Publish in leading academic journals. 

  1. Present your results at major academic conferences in the field and contribute to the work of the IISC, including developing and submitting grant proposals. 

 

Your Profile 

  1. A Ph.D. degree in law, political science, philosophy, psychology, or sociology with a focus on digital technologies (such as digital humanities, digital social science, or digital psychology), or a Ph.D. in computer science (e.g., AI) with a focus on issues related to law, social sciences, or humanities. 

  1. Knowledge and experience with computational methods for Natural Language Processing (NLP), including text classification and analysis. 

  1. Expertise in the theory of social and collective identity, along with knowledge of deliberative democracy, is an advantage. 

  1. A solid track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals. 

  1. A team player with a high degree of autonomy. 

  1. Proficiency in English; knowledge of Arabic is a plus. 

  1. Willingness to reside in Prague throughout the contract. 

  1. While not required, knowledge of Czech or a willingness to learn it would be considered an advantage.
