Professor Komárek lectured Ukrainian students on European integration and constitutional pluralism
Professor Jan Komárek, holder of the Donatio Universitatis Carolinae Chair at the Faculty of Law, taught within the international educational project Invisible University for Ukraine, organized by the Central European University (CEU). In the course Constitutional Stories of EU Integration, he delivered an online lecture devoted to constitutional pluralism and the role of constitutional courts in the European Union. Other lecturers in the course included, for example, Professor Paul Craig of Oxford and Gráinne De Búrca of the EUI, and the course will conclude with a lecture by Koen Lenaerts, President of the Court of Justice of the EU.
Komárek delivered the lecture together with Professor Matej Avbelj (Nova Univerzita, Slovenia) and Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Oleksandr Vodiannikov. In his contribution, he placed the issue of the interaction between national and EU law within a broader political‑theoretical and philosophical context. He focused on the deeper dynamics of European integration and the complex relationships that shape the interaction between national judicial authorities and EU institutions.
Jan Komárek’s participation in this project naturally builds on the broader solidarity and efforts of Czech higher‑education institutions to support the Ukrainian academic community at a time when the ongoing war prevents Ukrainian universities from functioning normally. Sharing expertise and engaging in international teaching thus represents an important form of assistance to Ukrainian students—not only in overcoming the current crisis, but also in preparing for future post‑war transformation and closer institutional integration into European structures.
